Reflection

I corrected a lot of grammatical errors that I didn’t catch the first time around and what Professor suggested. In the second paragraph of my Introduction, I corrected the sentence from “Thus, the languages we use on a daily basis shapes our reality and is largely representative of our own character “ to “Thus the languages we use on a daily basis shapes our reality and is largely representative of our own character and the communities we belong to.” I made this change because as Harris argues, our literacies are a product of our own discourse communities. I also changed the last paragraph of my Introduction. At the end, I included a sentence that gave the framework of my paper. I made this change because it provides clarity for my audience by foreshadowing what exactly I will discuss. In the section titled, “An Americanized Upbringing in Elk Grove,” I changed the order of a few sentences to make it more cohesive. It previously read: “Another way I feel my parents have disadvantaged my early literacy development is the way in which my upbringing was more “Americanized,” as opposed to a heavy immersion of Filipino practices. For example, I did not pick up the Tagalog language because my family regularly spoke to me in English. Similarly, I have only visited the Philippines once when I was five, and what is left in my memory about the trip is minimal. Many of my high school friends can partially or fluently speak and understand their native language. So, when I consider my inability to do so it makes me question how I fit into the binary of a “good” or “bad” Filipino.” It now reads: “For example, I have only visited the Philippines once when I was five, and what is left in my memory about the trip is minimal. Also, I did not pick up the Tagalog language because my family regularly spoke to me in English. However, many of my high school friends can partially or fluently speak and understand their native language. When I consider my inability to do so it makes me question how I fit into the binary of a “good” or “bad” Filipino.”
